Hanging Ear vs UFO Coffee Filters:Which Is Right for Your Coffee Brand?

Hanging Ear vs UFO Drip Coffee Filters: How to Choose the Right Format and Packaging System

Single-serve drip coffee is more than ground coffee in a filter. The filter format shapes how customers brew, what they expect from the product and how the full retail package should be developed.

Two popular formats are the hanging-ear drip coffee filter and the round UFO drip coffee filter. Both can create a convenient pour-over experience without a machine, but they support different brand stories, cup-use scenarios and packaging layouts. The right choice depends on your coffee dose, target customer, preferred brewing ritual, retail channel and launch plan.

This guide explains how to compare the two formats—and how to match the filter, high-barrier outer sachet and retail box as one complete coffee packaging system.

Start with the Consumer Experience, Not Only the Filter Shape

Before choosing a format, decide what you want the customer to experience. Is the product intended to feel like a compact specialty pour-over ritual? Is it designed for an office, hotel, travel kit or convenient daily coffee? Will the customer already understand drip coffee, or will the pack need clear visual brewing instructions?

The filter format does not automatically determine coffee quality. Brewing results depend on coffee dose, grind size, filter material, filter geometry, water temperature and pouring method. Both formats should be tested with the actual coffee before the final packaging is approved.

Hanging Ear vs UFO: The Core Differences

Decision factor Hanging Ear Filter UFO Filter
Structure Two paper support arms hang the filter on opposite sides of a cup Round open-top filter with a circular support structure resting over the cup
Brewing experience Hands-on, pour-over-oriented and visually engaging Compact, modern and easy to present as a single-serve set
Consumer fit Specialty-coffee drinkers, gifting, hotel amenities and coffee education Travel kits, office use, convenience-led products and modern gift sets
Key development check Ear strength, cup-rim fit, opening width and coffee dose Cup compatibility, support stability, filter depth and coffee dose
Typical outer packaging High-barrier individual sachet + 5 pcs or 10 pcs retail box High-barrier individual sachet + compact square box or gift set
Brand expression Craft, ritual and specialty-coffee storytelling Convenience, novelty and clean product design

The hanging-ear filter and UFO filter should not be described as “better” or “worse” brewing systems. They create different consumer interactions. The brand should choose the format that best fits the intended product experience.

Hanging Ear Filters: A Portable Pour-Over Ritual

Hanging-ear filters, often called drip coffee bags, are supported by two arms that attach to the rim of a cup. The consumer opens the filter, pulls out the support arms, positions the filter over the cup and pours hot water through the coffee.

This format makes the brewing process visible. Customers can see the coffee bloom, control the pour and enjoy a small coffee ritual without carrying a dripper. It is therefore well suited to specialty roasters, curated gift sets, office amenities and brands that want to communicate origin, roast profile and brewing craft.

At Cailyn, a typical hanging-ear filter format is 7.5 × 9 cm. The final filter size and coffee dose should still be confirmed together. A higher dose, a different grind profile or a bulky coffee blend can affect the space available for water flow and the final sachet thickness.

On-pack brewing guidance is especially valuable for this format. Simple illustrations can show the customer how to open the top, pull out the two ears, place them on the cup rim and pour water in stages. This is particularly important in markets where hanging-ear coffee is still unfamiliar.

UFO Filters: A Compact Round Format

UFO filters are round, open-top single-serve drip filters. Their circular support structure rests over the cup, while the filter pocket holds the ground coffee below the water level. “UFO” refers to the round flying-saucer-like shape; it should not be described as a vacuum filter.

The format can create a clean, distinctive presentation and works well for brands seeking a compact, modern single-serve coffee line. It can suit travel sets, offices, hotel rooms and gift collections where simple storage and a visually different coffee format are part of the product appeal.

A typical Cailyn UFO filter is 9.5 cm in outer diameter, with an inner opening of approximately 5.7 × 5.7 cm and a filter depth of around 45 mm. These dimensions are a starting point, not a universal answer. The final configuration should be tested with the target coffee dose and target cup range.

For UFO packs, instructions should show the customer how to place the filter securely on the cup, add water gradually and allow the coffee to drain fully. The support structure, cup opening and coffee dose need to work together; convenience comes from a well-tested product, not from assuming every cup and every coffee fill are identical.

Match the Filter to Coffee Dose, Cup Compatibility and Brewing Instructions

Filter development should include a real filled-product test rather than relying only on an empty filter drawing.

Test item Why it matters
Coffee dose and filter capacity Prevents overfilling, poor water flow or insufficient space for brewing
Grind profile and brewing trial Confirms extraction time, flow rate and customer experience
Cup compatibility Checks hanging-ear arm length or UFO support stability with the target cup range
Filter wet strength Confirms the filter remains secure during the brewing process
Outer-sachet size and seal Ensures sufficient seal area and prevents compression damage to the filled filter
Filled retail-box fit Prevents sachets from rattling, becoming crushed or being difficult to remove
Transport test Checks the filter, sachet and box after handling and shipment

These checks are important for both new brands and established roasters launching a second format. A filter can look correct in a drawing but perform poorly when filled with the actual coffee and used with a real cup.

The Outer Sachet Protects Freshness

The filter holds and brews the coffee; the high-barrier outer sachet protects it before use. Ground coffee is sensitive to oxygen, moisture, light and external odours, so each filter is normally packed in an individually sealed outer sachet.

For hanging-ear and UFO filters, Cailyn can provide high-barrier, three-side-seal outer sachets. Common starting sizes include 10 × 12.5 cm and 12 × 12 cm, but the final dimension must be based on the filled filter, coffee weight and required seal width.

The sachet structure should be selected according to the desired shelf life, product positioning and target market. Conventional high-barrier structures, recyclable mono-material directions and kraft-look options can be evaluated case by case. A paper or PLA filter alone does not define the sustainability profile of the complete pack. The filter, outer sachet, retail box and local end-of-life system should be considered together.

Build the Retail Box Around the Actual Pack

The retail box should be developed after the filter and outer sachet are confirmed—not before. The box needs to protect the sachets, communicate the coffee story and make the product easy to organise and display.

For hanging-ear coffee, common retail configurations include 5-piece and 10-piece cartons. Cailyn can develop a 5-piece box around approximately 102 × 65 × 127 mm and a 10-piece box around approximately 110 × 85 × 127 mm, subject to the final sachet arrangement.

For UFO filters, a compact square box is often suitable. A common 5-piece reference format is approximately 13 × 13 × 7 cm. Gift boxes, drawer boxes and display cartons can also be developed for premium collections.

The right structure depends on the target market and fulfilment model. A finished gift set packed in China may justify a rigid or drawer-style box. If the packaging will be shipped flat to the destination country for local filling, a fold-flat carton can reduce freight and storage cost. The goal is to balance unboxing appeal with practical packing and landed cost.

A Low-MOQ Development Path for New Coffee Brands

New product launches do not need to start with the same volume or printing process as an established retail line. A staged approach helps brands reduce risk:

1.Confirm the filter format, coffee dose, cup range and outer-sachet size.

2.Produce samples and complete brewing, fit and transport checks.

3.Use suitable short-run printing for launch testing or limited editions.

4.Move to larger-volume production and more specialised finishing after demand is proven.

Cailyn can support custom filters from 1,000 sets, outer sachets from 1,000 pcs and paper boxes from 500 pcs. For a coordinated full drip coffee set, 1,000 sets is generally the more practical starting point. Final MOQ depends on the selected material, size, artwork and printing method.

One Coordinated Packaging Partner from Sampling to Delivery

With more than 21 years of packaging manufacturing experience and a base in Wenzhou, China’s packaging manufacturing hub, Cailyn coordinates drip coffee filters, high-barrier outer sachets, retail boxes, labels and shipping cartons through one project team.

Different components naturally require different specialist processes. Where qualified local production partners are involved, Cailyn aligns specifications, artwork, production timing and quality requirements while retaining responsibility for final inspection and export readiness.

This reduces the need for brands to coordinate separate suppliers for filters, flexible packaging and paper boxes. It also helps align dimensions, manage colour differences between film and paper, confirm final pack fit and plan consolidated shipment.

Depending on destination, shipment volume and product requirements, Cailyn can assist with air freight, sea freight and DDP shipping options for selected destinations.

Which Drip Coffee Filter Is Right for Your Brand?

Choose a hanging-ear filter if your brand wants to emphasise pour-over ritual, coffee craft and visual brewing engagement. Choose a UFO filter if you want a compact round format with a modern, distinctive presentation for convenience-led or gift-oriented products.

Both can be effective when the filter, coffee dose, outer sachet and retail box are developed as one system.

To receive a practical recommendation, share your coffee dose, grind profile, target cup size, preferred filter material, target market, pack count, artwork status and expected quantity. Cailyn can recommend the suitable filter format, outer sachet, retail box, printing approach and delivery plan.
